My last full day in Colombia has been wonderful and relaxing. I've just been taking walks on the beach, swims in the ocean, cat naps on the sand. I read for a while at the oasis like shopping center, next to the fountains, waiting for the pizza place to open, craving Hawain style pizza. Design work during the heat of the day, back to the beach for the sunset. Angelik is cooking me my last home made Colombian meal. All is packed. Reservation made for a bus from here to the airport in Cartagena at 8am manana. It will take 4 hours, then waiting for my jetblue flight to Miami, where I'll stay for a few nights. Feels strange to think I'll be asleep in my own bed in Santa Fe next to my love in 3 nights time.

My trip has been worth it. All in all, I like Colombia. There have been some very sweet people on this trip. I've really enjoyed the nature and the wildlife. Maybe I'd like to come back to see Medellin and that area, especially the resevoir, Guatepe. A great learning experience and recharging period, I'll need for the load of work upcoming next year. The magazine I work for Trend, will start publishing every 3 months in 2015 so who know when I'll have another opportunity like this.

Next time I travel to a foreign country remember:
Bring a back pack not a suitcase (would have been helpful on those mules)
a headlamp and a booklamp
good bugspray from the states
2 bathing suits instead of 1

Don't book things too far in advance, make sure I like the place before booking spanish classes there - its always possible to add them at the last minute.

I took a bus and a taxi to from Minca to my final stay in Colombia, back along the carribean coast not far from the Santa Marta airport in a quieter area between the mountains and the ocean. My host, Angelik, is wonderful. She is around my age and has studied in France and Spain and speaks French and English fluently in addition to Spanish of course, and has a French beau. She rents out 3 of her rooms in her cozy quiet home which is off a dirt road.

Before I'd left Minca, I'd been trying to schedule a massage/reiki appt. with a man I'd heard about in Minca. He is part of the yoga/massage/retreat place there called Rancho de la Luna. I was meant to have an appt with him in Minca the afternoon before I left, but it turns out he was in Santa Marta near the airport that day, so it worked out better for him to meet me at Angelik's house and give the session in my room there not too long after I got there! I was so happy it worked out at all and he arrived promptly at 7 for an hour and a half session. I've never experienced a treatment like his before. He looked more Spanish or Native American and was trained, you could tell, in lots of energy healing and very gifted. His treatment incorporated a mix of yoga, breathwork, massage and reiki. I felt so much better afterwards and would highly recommend. Needless to say, I slept very well.

The next morning, I'd already scheduled a horseback ride in the mountains with one of Angelik's friend's. So at 8am I was on a grey mare named Blancita headed up the mountains. The only scary part was having to cross a major freeway! Then we were climbing above the beaches and highrises. In 45 minutes we'd reached a glorious view of the coastline below - basically the beach neighborhood/suburbs of Santa Marta west of Santa Marta and east of the airport - I quite like this area as you have the mountains and the beaches both easily within reach. The scenery was stunning, passing from scrubland and tall cactuses and very arid land, into more wet almost jungle terrain. The climate and the day were perfect, blue sky views. Fernando was my guide. A great experience.

When I returned, Angelik has prepared me a delicious Colombian lunch with salad, fresh avacado, fresh fish, rice, and soup with corn, yams and chicken, oh and fresh thick mango juice. After that I took a nap, completely satiated.

Later, after catching up on emails and 4 hours worth of design work, I ventured to the nearby comercial plaza to withdraw money from the ATM (Minca didn't have one and I was depleted). The commercial plaza was surprisingly nice and I could walk along the beach to get to it. It was like a little oasis with fountains, potted plants, restaurants, a supermarket (where I stocked up on snacks for my trip back), and even a Crocs shoe store. After that, I took a quick swim in the tranquil beach near Angelik's house and watched the beginning of the sunset before walking 10 min back to Angelik's for an excellent nights sleep, with one and half days to go in Colombia.Jeannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18374673751498381536noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3240000733547615842.post-69462548463060634142014-12-09T17:55:00.000-08:002014-12-09T18:38:27.694-08:00Restful, Magical Minca

I recently returned from 4 nights and 5 days totally away from the internet up in the mountains above the little town of Minca.

Upon arrival in Minca (a one hour crazy bumpy drive from Taganga and the coast), I stored my luggage at Cafe de Minca (for $1), and took off for a hike with some German girls I met right away at the cafe. I had 5 hours to spare before my hosts could meet me. We hiked to Pozo Azul, a beautuful pool collected at the bottom of numerous waterfalls. We swam in the the cool refreshing water, no one else in sight.

Back at the cafe, we each had most amazing tall coffee frappachinos with crumbled oreo on top and I ran into the woman from Tazmania, Australia, Katerina, I'd met in Salento and had Thanksgiving with! We made plans for the next day. Cafe de Minca is a lovely oasis with handcrafts, an assortment of clothing (had to buy a dress from there even though it was way overpriced, its very original), gifts, coffee, jams, art, chocolate and a book exchange, and a wonderful comraderie of locals, expats and like minded travelers!

At 5pm, my ride arrived - Eugenio and Anna with 4 mules to take me up to their coffee farm. We rode the mules 45 minutes up a steep mountain path, arriving after dark. The smell of cilantro wafting through the air, stirred up by the mules who would snatch a bite at every chance. My entire stay at the coffee farm was quite magical. Numerous travelers and volunteers from around the world came and went and shared food. Anna cooked outstanding, typical colombian fare with a farm fresh flair. Delicious fruit juice from organic fruit on the farm - bananas, mango, papaya, lemonade, moras (rasberry like berries), passion fruit. Organic fresh coffee from the farm. Eggs with farm grown tomatoes and onions basically every morning, with some concoction of fried green platanoes. For dinner: coconut rice, salad or russian salad (cubed potatoes, peas, green beans, onions with either chicken or tuna; fish, chicken soup, meatballs and vegies over noodles or rice, vegetable/bean soup. Sometimes followed by organic hot chocolate. Each meal only cost $5 and breakfast was included in my $15 private rustic room.

Touci, the baby Toucan was always around for meals. He was quite the cheeky creature. Long thin butterfly like toungue to drink up any leftover juice. He would make a clicky sound with his beak that sounded like a cat purring whenever you stroked his neck.

There was also a mischievous 6 month old dog named Mona, female monkey in Spanish, the 4 mules of course, and an assortment of chickens for fresh eggs.

Most mornings I would wake up to sun, then the rain showers would arrive in the afternoon, followed by clearing and the lights of Santa Marta sparkling far below. The climate was delicious and refreshing. One day, I walked down the mountain to Minca to visit Katrina at her hostel, called Oscar's place. Another amazing oasis with views and a stone inground pool, owned by a Colombian named Oscar who'd lived in California for years, and now owned 70 acres of minca forest he was on a mission to protect from destruction. The rain torrented down all afternoon so I was trapped, what an amazing location to be trapped in :) Minca is the type of place that inspires creativity, where your heart can open back up. As I was sitting with the rain, poetic thoughts started forming.

While I wait for the rain to stop.

Always waiting for something, it seems.
I'd like to just be with the rain, no waiting.
As it slows, then pounds down again,
Decreasing to a trickle, then flooding the view,
In sheets over the mountains, solid, fickle.
Only the sound of cascading water,
The percussion of the jungle.
Slowing to a standstill, and sanding of wood,
Can be heard now from nearby.
No where to be, but with the rain.
Happy to be dry watching, listening.
The plants soaking it all up, glistening.
Clouds dispersing the blue pale sky.
Cool misty air moistening face.
I'll make it back up the mountain,
Without a single care now,
Cleaned out with the rain fall.

I had to hike back almost at dark when it stopped.

The last day, I went on the coffee tour included in my stay. It was the most in depth coffee tour I've experienced. The farm has been in Eugenio's family for 4 generations. It has survived the time when the FARC was in control and Eugenio's father was forced to pay them half his income or die, and most of the farms were required to grow drugs in addition to their normal crops.

On my last morning, Eugenio took my luggage down by mule, but I walked since the trail had become dangerously slippery to ride down. When I got into Minca proper, I again stored my luggage in order to explore. I hiked up to the Cascada de Marinka, a beautiful high waterfall. Then I went to the Lazy Cat Cafe for a delicious salad and cheese cake. So many of the restaurants in Minca are organic. Its quite a cute, artistic town. If I had to choose somewhere to live in Colombia, it would be Minca. Needless to say, I was sad to leave!Jeannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18374673751498381536noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3240000733547615842.post-70491960688088355672014-12-04T06:32:00.002-08:002014-12-04T06:40:29.445-08:00Back to the Carribean side

Because my end flight is out of Cartagena back to Miami (in retrospect I should have returned from Medellin and gotten to explore that area as I hear great things, oh well next time), I flew from the Armenian airport (near Salento) to Santa Marta to explore that region, especially Tayrona National Park and the mountains in Minca. Rather than stay in Santa Marta, I'd opted to stay in the smaller backpacker/beach town of Taganga a 15 min bus ride over a mountain from Santa Marta. I'm glad I chose to do that because its been much more peaceful and less expensive. I have my own room with bathroom for $15/night, and its set away from the main roads off a dirt road, so its the first place I've stayed where I don't have to where earplugs.

Santa Marta didn't seem like anything special. It had a nice, but small down town area with hostels and expensive cafes - overall the whole carribean coast is way overpriced from the rest of Colombia. I can't say I'm really a fan like I thought I was going to be of the colombian carribean coast. Its just so hot, humid and full of mosquitos and the cost is high. Maybe its just that I've been spoiled by way nicer, quieter and more beautiful beaches in so many other places I've traveled like New Zealand, Austrailia, Hawaii, Taiwan, so these over crowded ones here are just okay to me. It seems to me that they get raves from people who haven't experienced many other places, like Austin does to people who've only experienced the rest of Texas. Just being honest.

To be fair, my time in Tayrona National Park was lovely and a much needed reprieve. It was glorious to sit at Cabo San Jan beach for hours just listening to the sound of the sea and watching the waves come in. It never gets old doing that no matter where you are. The campsite was still packed with people, but all the foreigners were respectful and quiet, it was the colombian vacationers who had the music blairing until 11pm, which in a campsite near the ocean is highly annoying when you just want to fall asleep listening to ocean. Why do you want to hear music and tv in a place like that when you have to hear it day in day out in the cities?

To get to Tayrona National Park, I took public transport to the lesser known/entered Calabazo entrance. I got off the bus and started walking into the park. Basically I had a 3 hour hike over the mountains to get into the park. I was headed first to an ancient ruined civilation called El Pueblito. I didn't pass anyone for 2.5 hours until I arrived at El Pueblito! It was a wonderfully introspective time.

This whole trip has been so introspective. As my friend told me, I should store up this time for when I need it. How often do we get alone time? I'm so grateful for it. I do feel mentally recharged from this time alone so I'm not burnt out from work and am ready to go back and face the deadlines again. Physically, I'm pushed myself on this trip, but in a good way and my health feels great. The stagnation in my back has all but disappeared thanks to this introspective travel time. I realize how grateful I am for all that I have. The more I accomplish on the trip, which is rough around the edges, the more I boost my confidence and become more trusting of the guides within.

When I got to El Pueblito, I ran into the first people on the trip, a UK couple from London my age. We clicked right away and I ended up spending the rest of my time in the park with them. I was grateful to have like-minded company and people to help watch my stuff while I went swimming, eat dinner with and share the experience with! The beaches at Cabo San Juan were great for swimming. In other areas of the park the waters are too rough. We saw fish, sea iguanas, white egret like birds, and lots of neon colored lizards. A mangey little dog, that looked more like a cat, also befriended us. My new friends saw monkeys, but I missed them.

After the sun set, we had dinner together, fresh fish, rice, fries, salad and cerveza. I opted to rent a tent for the night (rather than a hammock). Even though it was stuffy, I didn't get chewed up my mosquitoes, just a few bites.

In the morning, we took another swim in the ocean, then started the 2 hour trek out the opposite side of the park from where I'd come in. This stretch was all flat along the beaches. Because I had come in the back way, I hadn't had to pay an entrance fee from that direction. I lucked out leaving because they were only checking people in, not out!

The bus dropped me back off in Santa Marta, I mailed some postcards, then took a little bus back over to Taganga where I spent one more night. I'd left most of my belongings at the hostel there and only took minimal things into the park.

Taganga is an alright little town, very shappy/shanty town feeling, but it does have a few hole in the wall restaurants with healthy options. Nothing to write home about.

Today I will take a bus back up into the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the little artist down of Minca. My hosts will pick me up by mule and it will be a 45 minute mule ride to my next little homestay at a Minca coffee farm for 4 nights. I may not have a lot of internet access there, which is grande.

I had quite a bit of design work come in while in Taganga, but luckily was able to get all caught up on it before and after the park trip, so I feel ready to head out....Jeannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18374673751498381536noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3240000733547615842.post-66248461571836784992014-12-03T19:07:00.003-08:002014-12-03T19:09:24.617-08:00Last Few days in Salento

After Thanksgiving, I spent a few more relaxing days in Salento. I lucked out finding a massage/reiki clinic tucked away behind some other shops. A Colombian/Canadian woman owned it and she set me up with a reiki session with a Colombian lady who looked like she belonged in India with her saris, crystal bead between her eyes and short, plump, smiling budah stature. She gave me a wonderful session with her unique blend of crystal pendulums and colombian essential oils. I've been feeling great ever since - the little knot in my mid-back that's so stubborn to disappear is still gone 5 days later. But I think it was equally the rest I recieved in Salento and the time I spent in nature, the long hike through the wax palms, and the absense from my computer, that did the trick.

The atmosphere was lovely and I would return here for the peace and pleasant climate. As a bonus, I met some very nice travelers in Salento I hope to keep in touch with. I'm glad I went out of my way to get there.

I woke up at 6:30 and started the hike up the hill of 3 crosses. Its highly recommend to start early when all the locals are going before work and when its cooler. Otherwise there could be thieves. Jorge, the man I'd met my first day in Cali, insisted on meeting me in the park near his house to walk me to the start of the trail so I wouldn't get lost. He has really made my time in Cali feel safer. Then he asked a local woman hiker to show me the rest of the way up. She went too fast for me, or rather, I hadn't drunk any water and was feeling dehdrated so had to rest and drink a bunch before continuing slower up on my own, but making sure to stay close behind another pack of people. It was a steep 1 hour climb up. How they got the towering 3 crosses up there a century ago is pretty amazing. When I reached the top, I saw the woman from the start of the trip and, even though she spoke no english, we were able to carry on a basic converstation about travel, family, life in colombia, etc all the way down. The way down only took 35 minutes.

After the hike, I went to the modern art museum. It was very well maintained and a nice community outlet for culture, offering cinema and live music on weekends. Then I was starving, but it was in between breakfast and lunch, so I walked back to my hostel (all in all 3 hours of walking). Awesome you can walk right up the mountain from town, rested then went out again for a delicious vegetarian meal near my hostel. I did a few hours of design work and relaxed the rest of the day.

Today, I again woke up at 6:30 and made my way from Cali to Salento with taxis and autobuses in about 4.5 hours. Sadly, I left my back pillow in the last autobus leg of the trip. Why do I always do that? Its the 3rd time I've left it behind on a trip and I really needed it this time! Oh well, if thats the worst that happens, thats not too bad - I can roll up a towel or a jacket to put behind my lower back the rest of the time and I'll just have to buy another one and clip it to my pants so I won't forget it form now on!. I think the hiking helped my back as it does feel better today.

There is a 5 hour hike I could opt to go on some day in Salento that's fairly moderate. We'll see. It rains a lot here, so the hostel conveniently rents rubber boots, but if its pouring, I don't think I'll want to go, since half the fun is getting to see something.

The hostel I'm staying at is immaculate, minnimilist and right around the corner from the Plaza. Its dutch run. I have my own room for $22/night. Its worth it for my work since I have my own desk, quiet and space. Its slightly quieter here than the other two places I've stayed in Colombia so far, but since its still on the streets, I do have to continue wearing earplugs like all the other places. Latin america is quiet. Even here in a town of only 7000 people, you can hear babies crying, kids on skateboards, icecream truck tunes, marching bands, people calling out selling things, horns beeping etc. The rain is very peaceful though and the hostal itself is quiet and I can feel myself relaxing here, out of the city.

I woke up on Thanksgiving day not knowing exactly what would unfold. The weather forcast the day before looked like rain. But, I woke up to sun! so decided to go on the 5 hour loop hike through the wax palms and took one of the willies up to the base with some other travelers at 9:30am. I was lucky to sit next to a very nice woman from Tasmania, Australia, and we ended up doing the whole hike together. It was absolutely stunning! and so wonderful to be in nature and hear various birds and insects. The trail was very muddy, criss-crossing streams and lost arc-like swaying bridges, and I was grateful I'd rented wellies for $1.50.

At about the 2 hour mark, we reached a little coffee finca and stopped for a rest and some moca before continuing on up the steepest part. An assortment of brightly colored hummingbirds zipped around the feeders stationed around the finca. As we started to descend on the other side of the mountain, the fog cleared and we had amazing vistas of wax palms. We rested on the softest grass carpet looking up at the 200 plus year old trees. You can really see the height compared to the cows in the fields below. It felt very prehistoric. We caught the willies back at 3:30.

Back at the hostel, we learned there was a thanksgiving dinner happening at 6 that included the 3 course meal for about $16 plus extra for alcohol, so 4 of us from the hostel decided to go. To get there, we walked 20 minutes to an ecohostal where the spread was being prepared. 46 other travelers from around the world also showed up. It couldn't have been easy to cook a non typical colombian meal for that many people. They did a great job - we even had turkey! It was delicious - especially the carrot souflee they'd subsituted for pumpkin pie. We were all stuffed at the end and sleepily walked back another 20 minutes to our hostel and all went to sleep by 10pm. What a wonderful way to spend thanksgiving and the best part was the unexpectedness. I really love Salento and am so grateful I ended up here for thanksgiving and have another few relaxing days here.

I've spent two full days in Cali now. Its a fun, relaxing, neighborly and well-cared for place from what I can tell. I am staying in the San Antonio neighborhood at a French run hostal with stained glass windows and tiled floors, near the beautiful San Antonio church. I feel completely safe walking around after dark. There are a lot of little shops, bakeries and a surprising number of international, organic and vegetarian places. People spend time outside enjoying themselves and the great weather (80's but lower humidity and breezy with cool air at night for sleeping and no mosquitos).

Yesterday, I tried to go to the modern art museum (my gudiebook said it was open on sundays) but it was closed. So I stopped at an organic cafe and was immediately befriended by two 60ish colombian men (Jorge and Bill) sitting on the patio with their dogs. They thought I looked lost and started talking to me to help me out. They both lived and went to boarding school in the US - New Orleans, Connecticut, Houston, and San Francisco so spoke English. One sells organic insect repellent he imports here from the US. Bill kept going on and on about how I should start learning Poruguese instead of Spanish, how its a true language and more people speak it around the world than Spanish apparently including 6 countries in Africa. I did not know that. Then, their artist friend, Jorge Calero, wandered over to us. He's lived in Portugal for 6 years and told me the same thing as Bill. I walked over to see Gorge Calero's artwork and it was pretty interesting, abstract/fantastical/themed on the 4 elements. He said I could buy one for $250 and have the canvase rolled and shipped. I have his website in case I want to.
http://www.cctraductores.com/jc/index.htm
I would like to start an art collection from places I travel and I did like his whimsical work - it was real - not cliche.

The other Jorge (last name Valencia), invited to take me on a walking tour with his dog, Paco. So I went with him and he showed me the river walk, down town and some other cool sites for several hours, so pleased that I liked his city.

I told him right away that I have a boyfriend who works in the bike industry, just in case he got any other impression. He said biking is huge in Cali. Every Sunday, they shut down a major street and it belongs to cyclists from 8-1. Indeed, its bike friendly and I noticed a lot of bikers and better traffic and roads than in Cartagena. Jorge asked if I could ask my boyfriend about getting a discount on a bike from his shop and having it shipped here as bikes cost twice as much in Colombia! I said I would ask. He said he recently moved back to Cali from the states 3 years ago and its his favorite Colombian place, but its changing as not so great people from other cities in Colombia come here bringing crime, poor driving, bad manners.

I met the two men again today for coffee and Jorge gave me 5 Colombian DVD's to watch. So nice and unexpected!

Its a tricky mix between being hesitant, wary, coming across as timid even, guarded with my bounderies up to being open to talking to strangers, coming across as confident, bold and friendly. Traveling around Colombia is a learning experience for sure that takes me out of my comfort zone since I know minimal Spanish and am a woman traveling solo.

Some part of me likes to be pushed out of my bubble that way. Not all the time - I like traveling comfortable places too like New Zealand, Europe. I can't wait to go to Japan. But being in latin America makes me more grateful for what I do have, the life I get to live in Santa Fe, etc. The more time I spend in latin america though, the more certain I feel that its not somewhere I'd want to live myself. I'd like to sometime live in a foreign country, but would prefer a country that has a high level of spiritual awareness. Most of Latin america feels pretty full of young souls more interested in the material consumption. Nothing at all wrong with that, but that's just another reason it pushes me out of my comfort zone and why I gravitate toward Santa Fe. Too bad its so cold and dark in the winter in Finland, sweden and all those nordic countries!

Today, I chilled out more, caught up on work, meditated, talked to my mom and had a long distance energy healing session from her (matrix energetics) since my back is feeling compressed from stress (also had a long distance session yesterday from a woman who does seimei back in Santa Fe so my back is improving again I hope), walked to an artisan market and a local colombian cafe for lunch, lounged around on the hostal terrace, practiced Rosetta Stone. Now I'm back in my room and might watch one of those Colombian movies I was just given.Jeannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18374673751498381536noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3240000733547615842.post-62307080253470365552014-11-22T18:54:00.002-08:002014-11-22T18:54:49.683-08:00Arrived in CaliI already like Cali a lot! Its funny how you can just tell about a place, sometimes even when you are still descending in an aircraft. It was dusk as we landed, so I could just make out the valley of green with low lying mountains surrounding it and lots of twinkling lights in the hills.

I was proud of myself for taking a mini-bus from airport to bus terminal ($5) like the locals and then a taxi from bus terminal to the neighborhood of San Antonio where I'm staying ($5), saving myself $ (the cost of a taxi straight from the airport would have been $25).

I'm staying in an artsy hostel I found on airbnb with my own room for $20/night with its own bathroom within the room, beautiful tile work and stained glass windows. The fan works great and blocks out any noise from the street. I can use the kitchen, laundry and living room. The top of the building has a terrace overlooking the city and the hostel is up on a hilly street, reminding me of San Francisco. I feel safe here immediately, and, even though it was 8pm, I wandered out of the hostel and found a little grocery store and a bakery nearby. There is a laid back vibe with people enjoying themselves here, (as opposed to trying to escape life with alcohol and loud noise as I felt was the case in Cartagena) which I love, people sitting in coffeshop patios, doors open, strings of colorful lights up, and young people walking around.

The weather is also great!!Jeannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18374673751498381536noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3240000733547615842.post-39935468421431878582014-11-22T07:10:00.000-08:002014-11-22T08:31:06.041-08:00Final day in Cartagena

My last day in Caragena was a good one. I went on a field trip with some other students from the language school and visited a remote village, salt flats and beaches. I swam in the ocean with a few other students with no one else on the beach, lovely and refreshing. The activity was included in my classes. I feel a little more confident being able to talk to people. It was definitely a good idea to take a week of classes. Rosetta stone is helping too. I also learned of www.duolingo.com that has free language instruction and www.italki.com that connects you with private language tutors around the world to learn via skype for about $9-11/hour or exchange classes for free.

I'll be in Cali later today and am looking forward to exploring there. I hope it is less humid than Cartagena!

Its been 3.5 years since I studied Spanish in Guatemala. I studied for 6 weeks there and it was just at the very end that I was getting to the point of understanding and being able to have conversations. I had the best of intentions when I left to keep studying, but after about 2 months of keeping up with learning, I stopped. Before going to Guatemala, I'd had about a months worth of beginning classes from studying while in Austin, and that was all.

So here I am in classes again in Cartagena feeling like I'm back at the starting point, but not quite. Slowly, what I learned is coming back, faster than it would if I'd never taken it I suppose.

The school and the teachers are very good. Still, the cost to take Spanish classes here in Colombia is more than double what it is in Guatemala and the classes are group here rather than private too. There are also much fewer options for studying, though I think more language schools will become available as tourists continue to come to the country.

After 4 hours of group Spanish with a really great teacher and two other students who are definitely beyond my level, I kind of felt like a wet rag - so saturated with "palabras" and the heat of the city, that I retired to my room most of the rest of the day to nap and do design work. I also promptly ordered rosetta stone level 1-5 to compel me to keep up with the studying when I return to the states again. I really do love learning another language, and I have no excuses not to keep learning Spanish living in Santa Fe. I think they even offer Spanish classes at the Travel Bug Cafe.

It does feel really great to be in classes and have some structure and community to the rest of my time in Cartagena, which is 3.5 more hot and sweltering days. I met a fellow student from Brazil who happens to be staying at the airbnb place I am, so we walked back and forth to class together. He doesn't like Cartagena's heat and traffic either and is doing the same thing I did and rebooking his flight to leave at 1 week instead of two. He has already studied a few weeks in Bogota and Medellin and preferred both of those cities. He said Bogota was still too crowded for his taste and it was impossible to get on public transport because there were so many people on the buses. About Medellin, he said it was extremely clean and the metro system was great, and it also has eternal spring weather. I met a girl from Michigan in my class and she has been all over Colombia and likes Salento, Tayrona National Park and Cali best.

Yesterday, I rearranged my itinerary, so I head to Cali on Saturday for only 5 days now, then on to Salento, a small town in the coffee region for 4 days, then Taganga (outside Santa Marta where I can book day trips to Tayrona National Park) for 5 days, followed by 4 days in the mountain villiage of Minca, and finally a few final days west of Santa Marta at a more quiet beach cottage. I'm much more excited about the rest of my trip now and looking forward to having more time in different parts of the country.

The change of pace feels like the right amount, not too sedentary, and enough time to relax in each place. Now that I think about it, I always start out trying stay longer in one place, and I get restless right away and find it much funner to hop around. When I first went to Guatemala, I was likewise only planning to go to Antigua for a month and Xela for a month each, but immediately found Antigua to be too touriste and ended up leaving after a week and proceeding to stay in a different place every 1-2 weeks instead. So, I'm not surprised really about my reaction and turn of events. Traveling requires being flexible and having a loose plan you are not afraid to reset.

Of course, if I were traveling with another person, resetting would be more difficult. I would compromise on the pace and that would be fine, because the trip would be equally about enjoying the places and the company of the other person.

I will take advantage of this solo travel, for reflections, for processing, and yes, for being selfish. It is different from other trips I've ever taken in that it is the first long solo trip while in a relationship. I am blessed that my boyfriend is so understanding and not the jealous, overprotective or competitive type. I have to say I've surprised several people by saying I have a boyfriend back home. Why are there so many male travelers with girlfriends back home and thats normal? There are also a lot of older divorced men here, doing their midlife crisis thing.

So, there is that thread back to connecting with another, letting them know you're still alive :) and this is especially relevant in this less polished country, different than if I was just away in Hawaii or Canada for a month. My dad has expressed a need for me to update them every few days for example. Having feelings of worry for someone can be a foreign feeling for some who don't often feel that emotion for another, but places like this can bring a caring kind of protectiveness out in the ones you love and bring you even closer together from far away.

I've been blessed with sun and little rain the 3 days I've been in Cartagena so far. Its the tail end of the rainy season so I wasn't sure what to expect. I've also been feeling great. You can drink the water here (unlike in Guatemala). The fruit is excellent. I think I had the best papaya ever today. Food seems to be pretty pricey though and sometimes a rip off. (I'm sure its not that way if you're a local and can speak spanish fluently). No stomach bugs and very little in the way of any stiffness or soreness in my back.

I had 3 seimei treatments (japanese form of energy healing 10X more powerful than reiki) in Santa Fe before I left, a reading/past life clearing with my excellent clarvoiant friend, Daeryl in Marfa, and an energy work/massage session last Monday, which have all really helped stabilize things, still I couldn't help worrying about the stress of travel. Its not that kind of stress that bothers me though. As my reading helped clarify, the stress that affects me is the kind I put on myself by not being confident and by expecting punishment for not being good enough (some from past life experiences). So, as soon as I got going, some of the old travel me (open, expectant of good things and my own empowerment in the face of difficult situations) seemed to resurface and I started feeling like that person again physically as well. I am meditating everyday, and that does wonders as well. The stress is all in my mind.

I am keeping up with whatever design work that comes in, and its been totally doable. I'm grateful to be able to work and travel. I'm sure the lessened amount of sitting at the computer is helping my system as well. When I was looking today at places to go in the country, I saw an ecohouse that specifically touted its "digital detox" reputation. Love it!

I have to say, if I wasn't booked for Spanish lessons already this week in Cartagena I would leave. I think 3 days is sufficient to get a feel for the place and see the sights, which are mainly the historical center. I also walked up to the san felipe castle for a great panoramic view of the city. If you have the time, going to Playa Blanca is supposed to be a must see 2 day trip from here, but I'm seeing other less crowded beaches around Taganga later so I think I'll avoid the tourists and congestion on that one - something like that would be funner with a travel partner anyway.

Against the advice of my guide book, I walked to the beach at Bocagrande yesterday (my guidebook said it wasn't a great beach). It was correct and it was also full of pushy people, demanding of tourists and not a relaxing place at all. I had to really watch my belongings, which meant I had to carry them out to a rocky outlying and put them there while I took a very quick dip in the carribean, which was like bath water. The worst experience was getting surrounded by two carribean massage ladies who wouldn't leave me alone and insisted they give me a demo despite me walking away and saying no, gracias at least ten times. I was tired and not thinking clearly, so I let them and before I knew it they were requesting 30 dollars. Nothing like that has every happened to me so I guess some part of me was asking for it or something. It was a good lesson in being confident to say no and really mean it and I will practice this with diligence the rest of my time here.

Needless to say, Cartagena is not as charming as it looked in the pictures, at least not my experience so far. The only good place to walk is the city center. Everywhere else, you have to fight traffic. The place I'm staying is very nice and I like all the travelers in it and at least I can walk in 10 min to the city center. I have to wear earplugs every night though, because my room is right on the noisy street. Today, I moved my flight to Cali up so I leave for there this Saturday as soon as my classes are over.

I talked to yet another traveler today who highly recommend Cali's laid back style and less humid temperatures. Even though its in the 80s there too, its apparently less muggy and more spring like. I will fly to get there. It was only $15 to change my flight! and rather than flying back to Cartagena, I will fly directly into Santa Marta and save myself a 4 hour bus ride.

I've been doing a lot of chilling in my room, which has been a good thing. So, last night, I watched a movie recommended to me called "La virgen de los sicarios" or the virgin of the assasins - set in Medellin in 2002 during the drug wars there. I know its changed a lot since then, but watching that movie made me glad I'm not going to Medellin. It was a fantastic movie and it was cool to see the country side and the city through it (and to learn how to pronounce the city's name ;). As Daeryl cautioned me, "don't feel like you have to pack it all in on this trip. Give yourself permission to stay in and watch a movie, and notice when you start to get overwhelmed."Jeannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18374673751498381536noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3240000733547615842.post-835716885233611852014-11-13T23:18:00.000-08:002014-11-16T18:21:16.290-08:00Cartagena - Arrival day

All the way on the plane over I sat next to some complaining Americans, disgruntled they had to go to Cartagena for their brother's wedding. They had the window seat and kept the blinds shut the whole time. I put my headset on listening to Spanish to avoid listening to their moping about dirt, lack of shopping and inability to go out to bars at night for fear of danger (they had never been before, but that's what they had their minds made up about).

Stepping out of the airplane on the tarmac felt refreshing. I had been expecting thunder and lightening, but the sun was out and the tiny, partially out door airport with wooden slatted arrival gates and colorful flowers reminded me of Hawaii's airport just a bit.

I was met not too long after arriving by someone from the spanish school I'll be studying at. Yes, it was an overpriced ride, but it was probably the safest way to get from the airport to where I'm staying without worry during this crazy independence day festival going on this week. The streets are a party! Its the tail end of the rainy season, so puddles and water had not drained from the last downpour. 88 degrees and pretty humid, partially sunny. We passed through the poor dirty areas full of stray dogs, stray people and large afro-carribian populations. On one side of the wall, the wealth, on the other the poor. We passed over a bridge over a bay with fancy sailboats, coming into nicer territory.

Isabel, my airbnb host was right there to meet me when we get to her house (about a 10-15 min walk from city center). My room has a hammock as well as a comfy bed with, thankfully, a mosquito net. There are also two adorable kittens here. There are also 5 other travelers staying here representing the UK, Holland, and Germany. Isabel rents out 5 rooms at any given time. She's in her 30's has a daughter, and is from Colombia, but she has lived the last 14 years in Barcelona, Spain, recently returning. We reminisce about how Barcelona is our favorite city in the world and how we wish the economy and ability to find work there was better.

I take some time off to catch up on design work and have a nap.

The UK couple said they are happy to come get me when they go out at night. I'm happy about this. Normally its safe to go out in the streets, Isabel says, but its kinda crazy during carnival and this is the only time the city is like this. So later on, I venture out into the city party with the UK couple and the German guy. The dutch guy goes out on his own, but we bump into him several times during the evening. We laugh a lot talking about languages and cultures, silly phrases and words like how zucchini is corget in England, for instance. My first impression of Cartagena is of a very young, carefree place. Also a place you have to watch yourself. The driving is nutty, not as bad as Guatemala by any means though. There are people in the streets spraying people with a sugary, sweet smelling foam. The foam melts off like snowflakes not causing any harm.

At the end of the evening, the German guy's back pack gets stolen from the bench we were sitting at when he went out for a smoke - but sorry, you just can't leave a backpack at your seat like that and not be surprised if someone takes it. Luckily nothing valuable was in it. It was a good reminder for the rest of us.

We took a cab back, only $1 each. I'm happy to be back and going to bed. The streets are quieting down now at 2am, but still traffic. I'm looking forward to seeing the city during the day and want to take a 45 min boat to Playa Blanca on Isla Rosario for a few nights next weekend after seeing a tour sign for it and hearing the UK couple saying you can sleep on hammocks out there and that its beautiful white sand and peaceful at night.Jeannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18374673751498381536noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3240000733547615842.post-58200819906285003892014-11-13T22:39:00.001-08:002014-11-16T18:20:14.891-08:00One night in Miami (actually Dania Beach outside of)

On my way to Miami, and now that I'm on my way, it feels right. Putting everything in the hands of the universe, as always when traveling. Wish I could remember to do that more in my everyday life. That's why traveling is so good for me. Faith in the unknown. Confidence = openness. Positive. Relaxed. Inspired. On this trip, I am interested in art, nature, beauty, calm, culture. Avoid chaos my clairvoyant said on Saturday. Why Colombia then? Isn't it full of chaos? We'll find out.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride, the flight attendant invites.

Oh, flying out of Santa Fe is pretty awesome. Layover in Dallas, also a good choice. Even though its freezing cold today (32 degrees!), I don't have to worry about a snow storm causing delays.

Later.

I'm in Dania Beach/Hollywood Beach, Florida. 83 degrees and balmy. I arrived at FLL airport at 2pm, took a 10 min cab to my airbnb, breifly met my host, Jeff, left my stuff and walked to the beach. Jeff said it was a mile or so. But he's a cyclist, so it actually took me a good hour to walk there at my fast pace. I'm sitting on the beach soaking up the last of the sun and appreciating the exercise to arrive here.

Back at my airbnb location. I chat with my host and can tell he's a good and interesting person. He and his wife moved here after 8 years in Las Vegas, Nevada. He bike tours all over the US. His wife works in airport security and makes enough for both of them. Originally from Boston, he kind of sound like a British person with an American accent because of all the places he's lived.

My friend Sarah from my College of the Atlantic days lives an hour away from Miami now and ends up meeting me with her boyfriend. We all have dinner together at a delicious vegan restaurant with nut cheese and gluten free cupcakes. Did I mention they also serve 3 flavors of kombucha on tap? Sarah and I order the guava. I'm happy. Its so nice to reconnect with Sarah. I love when things like this work out. Thats one benefit of posting where you are traveling on facebook.

Next morning, my hosts kindly make me coffee and a scrambled egg and offer to give me a ride to the airport! Lucky girl! We talk about traveling and the whys of Colombia. Well, I explain, every time I read about Cartagena in my research of South American cities I felt drawn to it. When I was traveling around Guatemala 4 years ago, quite a few people talked about how Colombia was one of their faves and I've had the bug to go since. Plus it was one of the most affordable and convenient places I could go in South America. 2.5 hour flight from Miami. And I absolutely love hidden treasures and the less traveled road. Additionally, I wanted to go somewhere Spanish speaking and to be near the ocean. I'm just anxious to get there now and find out.
Notes from my first trip to Mexico: Guanuato, Guadalajara, San Miguel, Quereterro

1/31/13

I'm in Guanuato, Mexico right now. Its good just to be taking it easy. I'm staying at my friend Kristin's parent's guest house. Normally, they rent it out, but vacancy this week and a free plane ticket, the chance to visit mexico with my friend and get away from Santa Fe's winter for a few weeks made the decision to come pretty easy. My cast on my wrist (from snowboarding) came off a few days before I flew here. It feels strange, but is healing well.

I'm lucky I get to do so much traveling and learning and simplifying and slowing down while doing so, more than I used to anyway. I'm learning how not to pack quite so much stuff in.

2/2/13

A horse just paced past my wind. I am trying to practice Spanish. Tomorrow, we leave Guanuato and head for San Miguel, just to see it, then on to Queretero. Then I go back to Guadalajara to fly out. Guanuato has been a cool place to see and hang out with all its windy, colorful colonial streets. We went in the Diego Rivera museum the other day and hung out at a hotel pool this afternoon. Its been a lazy vacation. I've also been working though - every day doing some freelance work, ads, media kits that sort of thing long distance. Its cool I can take my work with me. When I return, I will start a tutoring job through the rest of spring though for some extra income and stability.

2/8/13

2nd to last day in Mexico. Its gone by fast. I'm in Guanuato in an awesome eco-hostel writing on the roof top. Sunny, tranquil days. I love this town. Its hip, happy and cultural. Last night, Kristin and I just walked around the town amazed at how many people were out and about enjoying the night and the community. I am ready to go home though. I miss someone more than I ever have before and I can't wait to be in his arms again.

Quick trip to Steamboat mid December to meet Stirling's dad and store some of his stuff up there. Our first little road trip. Beautiful times, weather, hot springs, getting a ski lesson with his dad. Then braking my wrist snowboarding the following day at the bottom of the slope on the last run, of course. I found out it was broken a few days later when I went back to Santa Fe (where I have health coverage) and got an ex-ray and cast put on. Cast on for 6 weeks, a clean fracture. Should heal totally fine, just take some time. The weird thing is, I got injured this exact week the year before while sledding (concussion). Life's just telling me to slow down whenever I start getting too fast. I am done the film fest work and have a bit of a break until new work comes in, which I trust it will. It will give me some time to be still and take it easy. No rush.Jeannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18374673751498381536noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3240000733547615842.post-44378630750800028282013-04-02T12:50:00.001-07:002013-04-02T13:02:02.895-07:00Trip to HI, Big Island back in November

Here are some notes and pics from beach time on the big Island, where I traveled November 2012 for a friend's wedding.

11/12: Sittin' Kickin' it at Hookena Beach with a newfound crew of wilderness therapist friends. Soaking in the sun and the braking waves. I could definitely live here. Wonder if I ever will. Santa Fe is being really kind to me though and it would be hard to leave. This would be even more out there and hard to travel from. I'm always open and up for anything though. My intention right now in life is to go with the flow, to be creative, to be more conscious of my breathing, letting stress flow through me instead of storing it in my body. Being loving toward people. Working on my own projects.

11/14/12 Camping near the ocean at Kapa'a State Park Beach. I was hoping to find a restorative peaceful place to spend the night and here I am. The ocean is calling. The universe is calling through it. Our yearning for the universe is the Universe yearning for us. Last night, I went to my first ecstatic dance, with the group of wilderness therapist friends. It happened at a yoga retreat place I had heard of from a friend called Kalani. I hadn't make any special effort to come here, and yet I found myself here at this ecstatic dance. It was an experience. I heard the term cuddle puddle for the first time and experienced such a puddle of love after the dance was over and we lay laughing and deliriously tired on the floor.

I am reading Cynthia Bourgealt's book "Wisdom Jesus" in my tent. Reading about the Pacific Northwest Wisdom School she started in Santa Barbara. Reading about Kenotic Spirituality - self-emptieying as a path to fullness. Reading about Tantra in "its real sense as an ancient and authentic spiritual path, it seeks the unitive state of transcendence of separation and duality - through complete self-emptieying and out-pouring."

11/16/12
I am staying at a cottage on a coffee farm right near the wedding - the only accommodation I'm paying for on this trip. The only other guest in the cottage is a woman from Holland named Marienetta, but she looks Hawaian. Dark Skin and eyes and hair. She invited me to try and come swimming with the dolphins with her tomorrow. She tells me about her recent turning in life and how she feels she is just starting her 2nd life in this life. Its so funny how I am always meeting these kinds of people and fall into these conversations so naturally.

Its been a beautiful week. Last night, I met up with Katie and her friends for the bachelorette party. I got to spend the night at the Royal Kona Retreat for free with one of Katie's friend's, Liz, who's in a band in Las Vegas, NV (have to specify NV since there is a Las Vegas, NM). That was pretty cool to wake up in a fancy hotel on the ocean I never would have been able to stay in otherwise. That morning, Liz and I walked to an acai bowl breakfast place and split a bowl filled with bee pollen, cashew nut butter, coconut, banana, acai smoothie, and macs powder. Yum!

A few days ago, my last with my rental car, I went up Mauna Kea all the way to the top - even though they say you need 4-wheel drive to do that. Took a hike to the glacier lake there and some cool pictures.

Now back to the cottage I'm at through the wedding. Chirping crickets and frogs. I feel immense gratitude and peace with where I am with life now.
11/18 Wedding. Remember that all the choices we've made to be here now, depended on all the choices those before us have made. The reverend asking everyone at the wedding to make a commitment to send love and help to the bride and groom when they need it. That's really why we've been invited to be part of this ceremony. The bride and groom felt they could depend on us for love and support in their journey together. Traditional Haiwain wedding touches: conch shell blown at start, Luaos exchanged and given to parents of bride and groom.
Extra tall and crisp in suits of snow,
Cloud capes draping their shoulders,
Softening their stance into certain indigo.

Mountains, do you ever wish...
To glance at us, from a distance?
Through curtains and windows?
To have your space all alone?

You appear so remote, self-sufficient,
Unchangeable forever, or so we assume.
But you are constantly giving us
your room in the world.
